If there’s one thing that many Americans love, it’s sports. Millions of people tune into sports broadcasts every day, and many Americans even participate in a sport themselves. A 2019 Bureau of Labor Statistics study found that more than 19% of Americans participate in sports.Â
Playing sports is tough on the body, and players often want to ensure that their sports performance is as high as possible. Our physical therapy team can help you meet your performance goals with our sports performance rehabilitation services.Â
What is sports performance rehabilitation, exactly?
You might not be surprised to learn that sports performance rehabilitation is a type of physical therapy. What you might not know, however, is exactly what this service is used for. Our physical therapists can use sports performance rehabilitation to help recreational and professional athletes meet a variety of goals. For instance, this service can be used to help you:
- Identify movement deficits that can lead to sports injuries.Â
- Work to avoid a sports injury.Â
- Strengthen your muscles.Â
- Improve your flexibility.Â
- Boost joint range of motion.Â
- Increase endurance.
- Diagnose the source of current movement problems or sports injuries.Â
- Treat your movement difficulties or sports injuries.
- Get back to playing sports faster.
What is involved in a sports performance rehabilitation session?
Every person responds differently to injuries or movement issues, and this means that each person’s sports performance rehabilitation sessions will go slightly differently. However, there are certain steps that are typical to almost every session.Â
One of these steps is that your physical therapist will take you through a thorough patient history questionnaire and physical examination. You’ll be encouraged to ask questions at every point in the session. These questions can help us gain insight into your unique condition. The combination of the patient history, physical exam and your questions helps us provide you with an accurate diagnosis. Once we’ve diagnosed your issue(s), your physical therapist will create a physical therapy program that’s customized to your specific condition, needs and goals.Â
What techniques are involved in sports performance rehabilitation?Â
Sports performance rehabilitation plans are individualized to fit each patient. One reason this is possible is the array of services that our team offers. A few of the services that may be included in your unique plan include:Â
- Manual therapy.
- Functional movement screenings.
- Gait/running evaluations.
- Custom foot orthotic evaluations.
- Endurance athlete performance training.
- Sports team training/education.
- Neuromuscular activation (Neurac) therapy utilizing Redcord equipment.
- Bike position fitting.Â
- Blood flow restriction (BFR) training.
- Golf FIT.
- AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill® training.
How should I prepare for a sports performance rehabilitation session?
There are many ways you can help maximize the effectiveness of the physical therapy our team offers. One of these is to wear loose, comfortable clothing. You should wear sturdy, supportive shoes to your session, too. The idea is to wear something you’d be comfortable working out in. Many of the physical therapy services used in your sessions will involve active participation from you. Others, like manual therapy or foot orthotic evaluations, allow you to take more of a passive role.
We always encourage our patients to stay well hydrated before, during and after their sessions. Water is essential to helping your body heal. Also, the benefits of active and passive PT services are often increased when you’re well hydrated. Aim to drink one-third to one-half of your body weight in fluid ounces per day. You may need to drink more if you exercise a lot or have a physically demanding job.
