Four reasons you’re feeling lower back and buttock muscle pain

Lower Back Buttock Muscle Pain

Muscle pain in the lower back and the buttocks can make sitting down and standing back up painful tasks. The pain might be radiating while you’re doing certain tasks throughout the day, or it might be felt acutely when you’re in a particular position. Regardless of how you experience lower back and buttock pain, it can become frustrating to live with.

Are you experiencing muscle pain in your lower back or buttocks? If so, learning about the possible underlying conditions that might be responsible for your discomfort is the next step toward relief.

Four possible causes of lower back or buttock pain

  1. Sciatica — It’s important to note that while sciatica is common, it is not a condition itself but actually a symptom. The sciatic nerve runs down the lower back, buttocks and into your legs. When it becomes irritated because of another condition, you may experience sciatica. If you have pain or numbness in all three of these areas, then you may have sciatica. Managing sciatica pain means treating the underlying condition that may be responsible for it.
  2. Herniated disc — Discs separate the vertebrae in the spine. They are filled with a thick gel-like material that allows your spine to be flexible. If the discs tear or move out of place, the result is a herniated disc. This can cause lower back or buttock pain because the material can compress and irritate the sciatic nerve.
  3. Degenerative disc disease — This disease occurs over time. It is more common among older populations, but it may be found in younger people too. Weakened discs may result in bone spurs, which can cause irritation of the sciatic nerve, resulting in sciatica.
  4. Pulled muscles — A pulled muscle, also known as a strain, can be painful. It usually occurs by overworking the muscle like lifting a heavy object with improper form. The resulting pain may travel down your back into the buttocks.
