An exercise to expedite your rotator cuff rehab

Rotator Cuff Rehab Exercise

People who have an injured rotator cuff can take solace from the fact that they aren’t alone. Not even a little. In fact, it’s estimated that in 2004 more than 4.5 million doctor visits and 40,000 surgeries happened because of a rotator cuff issue.

If you’re looking to speed up rotator cuff rehab, therapeutic exercises are a technique that can help. Their effectiveness is supported by several medical studies. One of these reports that 74% of patients in the study didn’t require surgery after their physical therapy.

At first, your rotator cuff rehab is likely to focus on passive exercises. Such therapeutic exercises are designed to move the shoulder through part or all of its normal range of motion, but they use uninjured structures to do the actual movement. One such exercise that your therapist might recommend for you is the pendulum exercise.

How to perform the pendulum exercise

  • Place your unaffected hand on a table or counter. Bend over slightly so that your affected arm is hanging straight down.
  • Begin moving your body slightly to get your affected arm swinging a few inches backward and forward; allow your arm to swing back and forth 10 to 15 times.
  • Repeat these steps to swing your arm side to side and in clockwise and counterclockwise circles; do 10 repetitions in each direction.
  • Take a short break, and then repeat the exercise again until you’ve done three sets in each direction.
