Athletes, fitness enthusiasts and even just people who are committed to their health are always looking for more information about themselves. The reason? Reliable and recent information about your body and its movement patterns can be used to improve workout quality. This type of information can also help you manage pain, avoid injuries and generally improve your quality of life. Whether you’re an elite athlete, fitness enthusiast or just committed to your health, meeting any of these goals just got easier thanks to our new state-of-the-art technology—dorsaVi™ Professional Suite.
What is the dorsaVi Professional Suite?
The dorsaVi Professional Suite is a wireless technology that uses wearable sensors to objectively measure how you move. The sensors are about the size of a small USB drive, and they attach to your body with adhesive pads. Each attachable sensor actually has the ability to track your overall movement as well as how your muscles are firing. This system provides the data that has historically only been available to Olympic athletes and expensive biomechanical laboratories. The dorsaVi Professional Suite can report on movement metrics such as:
- Range, timing and quality of movement.
- Ground reaction force when running or walking.
- Symmetry of gait.
- Initial peak acceleration.
- Speed.
- Ground contact time.
- Cadence.
- Varus/valgus of knees.
- Flight time of the knees.
- Speed of collapse of the knees.
- Tibial inclination when moving the knees.
What is involved in a dorsaVi Professional Suite movement analysis?
The precise steps involved in your movement analysis may be different from the norm based on factors like your fitness level or the goal of doing the movement analysis. However, there are several steps that are commonly performed in a dorsaVi movement analysis.
First, your physical therapist will place the small adhesive sensors on your legs or back. Next, you’ll be asked to perform a series of exercises or to walk or jog on a treadmill. The movement series is designed to help the device record data that’s specific to your goals, which means your physical therapist will personalize it to fit your goals.
Once the movement series is completed, your results and feedback will be immediately available to you, and your physical therapist will review the results with you. They can also answer any questions you may have about your results. Finally, your physical therapist will recommend some specific steps or treatment options that can help you reach your goals.
How can a dorsaVi movement analysis benefit me?
There are many potential benefits offered by the dorsaVi system and our movement analysis service. Some of these benefits can include:
- Getting results and feedback immediately.
- Obtaining the ability to drive your training with real-time data.
- Identifying potential issues that may lead to injury.
- Enhancing technique.
- Optimizing performance in activities that use your legs for power, balance and agility (running, tennis, basketball or baseball).
- Revealing movement patterns in your back and legs that are causing pain.
- Pinpointing when it’s safe to return to activity after an injury.
- Enhancing your athletic performance.
- Recommending footwear changes.
How should I prepare for a dorsaVi movement analysis?
There are many ways you can help maximize the effectiveness of the physical therapy our team offers. One of these is to wear loose, comfortable clothing. You can wear sturdy, supportive shoes to your session, too. The idea is to wear something you’d be comfortable working out in, since your dorsaVi movement analysis will involve active participation from you.
When you first arrive for your movement analysis, one of our physical therapists will take you through a thorough patient history questionnaire and physical examination. You’ll be encouraged to ask questions at every point in the session. These questions can help us gain insight into your unique condition. Along with the data from your movement analysis, your questions can also help us provide you with an accurate diagnosis and plan of care. Your unique plan may include evidence-based physical therapy services such as therapeutic exercises, joint mobilizations and manual therapy.
We always encourage our patients to stay well hydrated before, during and after their sessions. Water is essential to helping your body heal. Also, the benefits of active and passive PT services are often increased when you’re well hydrated. Aim for one-third to one-half your body weight in fluid ounces per day. You may need to drink more if you exercise a lot or have a physically demanding job.
