Why am I feeling pelvic pain when walking?

Pelvic Pain When Walking

The answer to this question can be hard to determine because there are many issues that can cause pain in the pelvic area.

Unfortunately, feeling pelvic pain when walking or doing other normal daily activities is all too common. It’s especially common in women, and researchers report that about 1 in every 7 U.S. women experiences chronic pelvic pain. An experienced physical therapist can help you determine the reason you’re feeling pelvic pain.

Three reasons you might have pelvic pain when walking

Our therapy specialists can perform a comprehensive assessment designed to help you learn the source of your pelvic pain. This may include asking you questions about your daily routine. You may also be asked if you’re currently dealing with any medical conditions. Additionally, the therapist could ask you to perform specific movements to see what triggers your pain.

The combination of the information gathered in the assessment can help reveal the cause of your pelvic pain when walking. Three of the most common issues that can cause such pain are:

  1. Hip osteoarthritis — This condition affects 18.5% of men and 28.6% of women during their lifetime. It occurs when cartilage in the hip wears out as you age. Hip osteoarthritis can often lead to referred pain that’s felt in the pelvic area.
  1. Pelvic floor disorders — The pelvic floor is a collection of muscles that support the bladder, bowels and uterus. Problems with this structure can be a source of pelvic pain. One study reports that almost 24% of U.S. women have at least one pelvic floor disorder.
  1. Urinary tract infection (UTI) — This condition occurs when an infection occurs in the kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra. The most common sites of UTIs are the bladder and urethra. Women are also more likely to develop UTIs. In fact, researchers estimate that up to 60% of adult women will have a UTI in their lifetime.
